Dr Roberts has been hosting Year 5 medical students for over 15 years, and the quality of his teaching is evidenced by the number of commendations students have submitted over the years.  His dedication and enthusiasm to undergraduate teaching is exceptional and clearly highly valued by the huge number of students he has taught and inspired.  Dr Roberts has been praised by students for his ‘enthusiasm and devotion to teaching’, being ‘friendly, approachable and supportive’ during placements, being a ‘fantastic supervisor’ and ensuring placements are ‘really beneficial and enjoyable’. 

Dr Bukhari has been hosting medical students across various year groups for over 15 years. Medical education has always been a priority for Dr Bukhari and he has worked exceptionally hard to embed this into the ethos of his practice team. He has continually gone above and beyond in his role as undergraduate lead for the practice, including contributing to many innovations and projects for the School of Medicine’s primary care placement team.  

Leeds School of Medicine hugely value his work as an educator and the outstanding placements his team provides. Students have regularly commended Dr Bukhari’s passion for teaching students and approach to patient care. He has been described as ‘an amazing supervisor’ and has been praised for his ‘kindness and approachable nature’.

Dr Ian Pickering, South West Yorkshire Partnership Trust (holding certificate & trophy)

For over 17 years, Dr Pickering has been a passionate educator.  His excellent teaching of community psychiatry is highly valued by Leeds medical students and the wider undergraduate medical education team.   

Dr Pickering has extensively planned and improved the teaching programme at South West Yorkshire Partnership Trust and has also produced OSCE style teaching station videos to assist students in preparing for their end-of-year exams. 

Dr Pickering regularly receives excellent feedback from both students and is praised for his engaging teaching style.

Stuart Cook, Harrogate District NHS Foundation Trust 

Stuart’s achievements as a Clinical Skills Trainer are vast.  When he’s not setting up a clinical skills and simulation laboratory or his Trust’s first simulation based interprofessional course, he’s initiating a programme of ultrasound guided vascular access workshops for students.  Stuart has regularly received student commendations for his clinical skills teaching which has been described as ‘transcending the conventional boundaries of academia’. 

Stuart’s down to earth approach means he can quickly connect with students, build confidence in clinical skills and gently push students out of their comfort zone.  

Stuart plans to retire later this year and will be sorely missed by all his medical education team colleagues.  

 

Dr David Cockshoot

Dr David Cockshoot, Ilkley and Wharfedale Medical Practice 

Dr Cockshoot continually receives outstanding feedback for his placement teaching demonstrating the commitment and enthusiasm he clearly has for medical education.  

He has been delivering Year 5 placements at Ilkley and Wharfedale Medical Practice for over 15 years and has always shown great enthusiasm to teaching by adopting an innovative and inspiring approach.  

 Students clearly appreciate his dedication to providing an exceptional quality primary care placement.  Dr Cockshoot has been described as ‘truly inspirational’, an ‘unbelievable teacher… who uses excellent analogies and scenarios to make learning both engaging and effective’. Placements with Dr Cockshoot have been described as supportive, structured ‘perfectly’ and ‘incredibly educational and enjoyable’.

 

Paula Byrne, Leeds Institute of Medical Education (retired) and Dr Ashraf Khan, Ashcroft Surgery, Bradford 

Paula began her nursing career in oncology in 1986, supporting students and staff clinically over many years at LTHT. She later transitioned into a role as a clinical educator at Wheatfields Hospice before commencing as a valued member of the Clinical Skills Education Team (CSET) at the University of Leeds over the last decade.  

Paula has been inspirational to her colleagues in her enthusiasm and commitment to the highest quality of teaching day after day. In addition to her regular clinical teaching, Paula has held additional roles within the team in which she has made significant contributions. 

Testimonials made in support of Paula’s nomination from her colleagues were truly exceptional and are too numerous to list here but words used to describe Paula included ‘ 

Paula leaves a void that will be keenly felt in the Clinical Skills Team, but we and all her colleagues wish her a long and happy retirement! 

 

Dr Khan has been delivering exceptional placements at Ashcroft Surgery in Bradford for over 15 years across Years 1, 2 and 5, and we are delighted to be able to show our gratitude for his dedication and continued commitment to undergraduate student education. Our students have greatly benefitted from Dr Khan’s teaching, support and expertise. He has been described by students as ‘a phenomenal practitioner’ ‘an inspiration’, ‘wonderful to learn from’ and ‘without doubt one of the best tutors/doctors that has taught me to date’.  

 

Dr Beccy BardgettDr Rebecca Bardgett, Bradford Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust 

Dr Bardgett has been an undergraduate medical education lead in their department for 20 years.  Since the School of Medicine began keeping records of commendations from around 2018, she has received 105 green card commendations! 

This one student commendation seems to sum up Dr Bardgett’s exceptional contribution to clinical education: 

‘Her paediatric abilities are the best I have ever seen. She combines an extensive knowledge base with such graceful communication skills that watching her work and observing her interactions with patients, parents and staff ... [has] made me a better medical student. The teaching sessions ran by her were the best I have encountered thus far in medicine. Finally, her ability to elevate and educate you in every exchange, regardless of how busy she was, is the main reason for this green card!
