Clinical Teaching Development Awards 2023-24 winners

Dr Rose LaudDr Rose Laud, Core Trainee (Psychiatry) Leeds and York Partnership Trust 

Dr Laud’s application was of high quality with excellent evidence showing a sustained commitment to undergraduate medical education. The panel specifically mentioned her perseverance in developing her teaching practice through career progression and her efforts being recognised by her achieving Leeds and York Partnership Trust’s Core Trainee Outstanding Teaching Award 2023.   

Dr Laud’s application also showed evidence of being actively involved with service evaluation to redesign and organise teaching programmes through engaging with student voice and facilitator feedback.  She was instrumental in organising the Tea Club – a Year 4 twice weekly teaching programme which aims to provide students with opportunities to deliver peer-to-peer and case-based teaching under supervision.  

Finally, Dr Laud has taken the opportunity to get involved with the assessment of undergraduates and future students by being an OSCE examiner and a MMI interviewer. 

 

Bethany SantarasBethany Santaras, Bradford Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust 

Bethany Santaras submitted a detailed and high-quality application that demonstrated clear evidence of her delivering and promoting excellence in undergraduate medical education.  She has been an educator at Bradford for the last 3 years and has been described as ‘an approachable, enthusiastic and committed educator’ to both students and colleagues. Through clear explanations and giving constant feedback, it is evident that Beth builds students’ confidence in their learning of practical skills.   

The panel specifically noted her ‘dedication to providing personalised pastoral support to develop student confidence and her innovative use of promoting teaching through collaboration with others’.   

Beth is truly passionate about medical education.  She improves her practice through careful reflection and always strives to learn more and expand her knowledge. 

 

Dr Robert PalinDr Robert Palin, Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust/Leeds Institute of Medical Education 

Dr Palin’s application was excellent, well-organised and jam packed with evidence.  He provided the panel with fantastic evidence of delivering and promoting excellence in undergraduate medical education through collaboration and careful reflection.  The panel specifically noted Dr Palin’s strong commitment to improving the student learning experience in a wide variety of ways including contributing to improving module content, deepening learning through intra-placement learning resources and designing engaging interactive case resources. 

Dr Palin is always keen to share his learning and regularly delivers updates locally to his clinical educator colleagues and nationally at conferences. He is also an OSCE examiner for the University. 

Dr Palin has been described as an ‘enthusiastic and personable educator whose input is highly valued by students and faculty alike’.
