Ophthalmology Team, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust

Ophthalmology’s application evidenced a strong culture of teaching excellence throughout its small but dedicated multi-disciplinary team.

Being acutely aware that the five-day placement may be the only dedicated ophthalmology teaching many learners receive throughout their entire medical careers, the Team strive to provide a varied, inspiring and memorable learning experience.

The panel recognised that ophthalmology placements are thoughtfully developed and well-organised offering a detailed induction pack, bespoke timetables and individualised support. It was noted that all of the team go out of their way to welcome and integrate students into the team, something which is frequently recognised by students through commendations and feedback.

Students’ learning opportunities are maximised through authentic and varied activities. Students spend time in clinic and theatre and are offered a mock OSCE that provides an opportunity to consolidate teaching and to deliver personalised feedback. Teaching sessions have been described as ‘amazing with lots of opportunities to practice key skills’. Through peer observation and reflection, Ophthalmology’s teaching sessions are constantly improved.
